IN 2013 RBCT HAS, FOR THE FIRST TIME, EXPORTED MORE THAN 70 MILLION TONS OF COAL
COALspot.com: South Africa's Richards Bay coal terminal, the world’s largest single coal exporting terminal shipped 6.788 million tonnes of coal in December, an increase of 568K tons from the previous-month, according to latest data released by Richards Bay Coal Terminal. Richards Bay's coal terminal shipped totaled 6.224 million tonnes in November 2013.
According to the World Coal Association, South Africa is the seventh-largest producer of the coal globally.
Year-to-date coal exports at Richards Bay, which has a design capacity of 91 million tonnes per year, totaled 70.234 million tones or 2.78 percent higher than 2012 exported quantity. According to terminal’s note, In 2013 RBCT has, for the first time, received and exported more than 70 million tons of coal.

In December, eastern Asia imported the largest share of Richards Bay exports, taking in 28% of the total coal shipped from the terminal. Markets in southern Asia accounted for 16% of the volume. South eastern Asia and western Asia together imported around 13.1% of volume shipped from RBCT in December.
Total shipments to Europe represented 38% (Western Europe 25%, northern Europe 4% & Southern Europe 9%) of the total exports.
Stockpiles at the terminal declined to 3.131 million tonnes, compared to 4.201 million tonnes at the end of November.
Sixty two vessels, including 44 Capesize vessels & 9 Panamaxes entered the coal terminal during December, compared to 60 (39 capes & 11 Panamxes) in the previous month.
Total coal exports in 2013
The terminal shipped 70.2 million metric tons in 2013 compared with 68.3 million tons in 2012, it said on its website today. RBCT handles coal from mines owned by companies including Glencore Xstrata Plc, Anglo American and BHP Billiton Ltd.

In 2013, southern Asia imported the largest share of Richards Bay exports, taking in 33% of the total coal shipped from the terminal. Markets in eastern Asia accounted for 28% of the volume. South eastern Asia and western Asia together imported around 14% of volume shipped from RBCT. Markets in Asia in total consumed around 75% of total exports of South African coal in 2013.
In the meantime, total shipments to Europe represented 20.8% (Western Europe 13%, northern Europe 1.3% & Southern Europe 6%) of the total exports.
658 vessels, including 440 Capesize vessels, 98 Panamaxes and 120 handy size vessels entered the coal terminal during 2013 to load 70.2 million tons of coal, the ports report says.
South Africa produced high calorific value coal and one of the favoring coal supplier for Europe as well as Asia particularly India.
