SHIP OWNERS ONCE AGAIN TURN TO DRY BULK CARRIERS - NIKOS ROUSSANOGLOU, HELLENIC SHIPPING
Ship owners once again turned to more dry bulk carrier ordering over the course of the past week, as more and more appear convinced of the industry's long term prospects. In total, shipbrokers reported a total of 77 new orders for ships with an aggregate carrying capacity of 8,080,772 tons, out of which, 44 transactions were reported at an undisclosed price. According to Piraeus-based shipbroker Golden Destiny, the total amount invested stood at $1.5 billion for 33 new orders (involving many vessels each).
The shipbroker noted that out of the 77 new vessels ordered, 37 were dry bulk carriers, 14 were tankers, 6 were container ships, 2 were car carriers, 3 were gas tankers, while the remaining 15 were special projects. In total, the weekly newbuilding activity was 57% higher than last week and a rather impressive 83% up over the similar week of last year. According to Golden Destiny, "the largest volume of newbuilding activity is reported in bulk carrier segment with focus in ultramax/kamsarmax/capesize vessels and VLCC tankers. Orders for bulk carriers and tankers held 48% and 18% share respectively of this week’s ordering activity; special projects follow with 19% share and containers with 8% share", said Golden Destiny.
It added that "at a similar week in 2012, 42 fresh orders had been reported with zero reported business for tankers (9 bulkers, 6 gas tankers, 3 containers, 2 car carriers and 22 special projects). Compared with previous week’s levels, a large increase of 61% is recorded in the volume of new orders for bulkers (37 new orders from 23 last week). In the tanker segment, there is a 13% weekly decline with 14 new orders from 16 last week. In the offshore segment, there is 200% weekly increase with 15 new orders from 5 last week and high valued contracts for jack up drilling rigs.
In a separate report, Clarkson Hellas noted on the dry bulk ordergin activity that "Singapore based Cara Shipping have ordered two firm plus two option 250,000 DWT VLOCs at Beihai Shipyard for delivery in 2016. Pricing is in the region of low USD 60 Mill. At Nantong Cosco KHI (NACKS), four firm 209,000 DWT Newcastlemax has been ordered by two separate Buyers; Foremost Maritime and Winning Shipping, with delivery in 2016 and pricing circa USD 58 Mill. In the smaller sizes China Navigation (CNCo) have declared their options for four 39,250 DWT Handysize bulkers at Zhejiang Ouhua with delivery in 2016. Kouan Shipbuilding in China also received orders for seven firm plus three option 38,500 DWT
Handysize from Marine Capital. Price level is understood to be around in USD 27 Mill and deliveries are split between 2016 and 2017".
It added that there was "limited ordering in the container market with just one order to report from Ciner Denizcilik Sanayi vet Ticaret A.S. for four firm 9,040 TEU container carriers to be built at Hanjin’s Subic facility in the Philippines with delivery in 2015 for three units and 2016 for one. In other sectors Auto Marine Transport have declared the options for four 6,700 unit PCTCs at Samjin Weihai with delivery in 2015", Clarkson Hellas notedd.
More specifically on the dry bulk side, Golden Destiny reported 6 new Capesize orders:
