CAPESIZE: DOWNWARD; SUPRAS AND HANDIES: STABLE - INTERMODAL
The Dry Bulk market has resumed its downward movement, noting another dip for a third week in a row. The larger size segments were responsible for pushing the BDI further down. The Capesize market witnessed the biggest decreases across the board, while Supras and Handies displayed a stable picture. The sentiment has therefore been a bit mixed and it is quite hard to make even short term predictions at the moment. Saying that and despite a retracting market, both on physical and paper terms, the fact that the most populated size segments are holding on to their gains is definitely a good sign for now.
This was an extremely quiet week for the Cape segment. In the Atlantic there have been rumours of a fronthaul business seeing over $35,000/day but no further details have surfaced so far, while rates continue to trend down. At the same time the numbness from holidays in the East is still weighing down on rates in the region and Q1 FFAS for the segment continue to move south. Rates for Panamaxes also closed the week off in the red. Owners ballasting in the Pacific ended up striving for business, while things in the Atlantic were no better, as the USG region didn't offer enough fresh cargoes to satisfy available tonnage.
The Atlantic keeps being very supportive for Supra tonnage, with firm numbers prevailing ex-USG, while the same is happening in the Black Sea/Med region. Rates for Handies remained stable, noting small gains overall, while the average rate managed to move north of $ 9,000/day.
