PANAMAX: FIRM ; FIXING ACTIVITY INCREASED IN BOTH BASINS - INTERMODAL
 This was another week of gains for the Dry Bulk market, albeit very modest ones compared to the previous ones. Charterers and owners struggled for the upper hand but neither side managed to win as rates moved sideways overall. The week started slow for all dry segments, with holidays in China taking their toll on both the paper market and charterers fixing ideas. None-the less towards mid-week sentiment improved once more for the bigger size segments mainly driven by the paper once more and as a result the market started firming again with a lot of support mostly coming from front-haul Atlantic activity. The end of the Chinese Golden Week should allow for a better idea of where the market stands.
Rates for Capes moved south on the back of holidays in both China and Korea but after sentiment reversed mid-week so did ideas in the market. The net result was a slight decrease for the BCI on a weekly basis, but given the impressive rally so far a downward correction was due.
Rates for Panamaxes kept firming as fixing activity increased in both basins for another week. The T/C market has also improved further while the aver-age rate has now surpassed $ 15,000/day, while Kamsarmax rumoured fixtures are still achieving impressive figures.
On the smaller size segments the market has remained pretty much steady, with sentiment improving nonetheless on the back of firm enquiries in the Pacific and some stronger North Atlantic activity mainly for Supras. Rates for Handies also increased albeit fractionally. The average rate for the segment has now reached $ 8,600/day, a level last visited in July 2012.
