PANAMAX CHARTER RATES TOUCHING US$ 18K FOR A TRIP TO NOPAC - CAPT. REDDY
COALspot.com : The freight market continued to remain firm, BDI and the Panamax index up week ended 27 September 2013.
The cape index was fell towards second half of the week and ended 1.27 pct lower and closed at 3,967 points but the BDI was up by 7.45 pct and closed at 2046 points on 27 September 2013.
The biggest gain was in the Panamax index this week which jumped 23.88 pct week on week and closed at 1,800 points. The supramax also followed Panamax trend, up almost 11 pct and closed at 1069 points. The handy size index was also up by 6.45 pct closed at 594 points.
There was acute shortage of tonnage in the supramax sector mainly from Indonesia to India as many owners preferred short period or 2/3 Laden legs. The Panamax charter rates were also quite firm with charter hire touching US$ 17000-18000 per day for trip to NOPAC.
“The tight on tonnages and firm freight rates are expected to continues this week”, said Capt. Reddy of Solym Carriers Pte Ltd, Singapore. But he also said that, “the cape charter rates are trying to come down and if that continues expect that Panamax charter rates also would soften in due course.”
The average charter rates was at Cape/US$ 38,023 per day , Panamax/US$ 14,436 per day , Supramax/US$ 11,179 per day and Handysize/US$ 8,473 per day.
The futures for three years (2014-2016) was at around Cape/US$ 18,500 per day, Panamax/US$ 11,500 per day, Supramax/US$ 10,500 per day , Handysize/US$ 9,000 per day.
The supramax index in the far east (S8 route) was up by 8.94 pct and closed at US$ 10,773 per day (last week US$ 9,889 per day) .The route S7 was at same levels closing at US$ 7,875 per day (Last week US$ 7,875 per day) . The freight market in this sector is expected to be firm this week.
The Brent crude oil prices was slightly down by 3.15 pct and closed at US$ 108.63 per barrel (last week US$ 109.22 per barrel). The bunker prices also closed lower at US$ 611.00 pmt (IFO 380 cst ex Singapore on 27th Sept 2013).
