ANOTHER WEEK IN THE RED FOR DRY BULK CARRIERS - INTERMODAL
Chartering (Wet: Stable- / Dry: Stable- )
Another week in the red for Dry Bulk carriers with the market losing further steam as fewer and fewer inquiries were entering the market. There is still some activity in the USGulf and Black Sea region for some of the smaller sizes, however the larger capes have little to look forward to till at least September.
The BDI closed today (13/08/2013) at 1007 points, up by 11 points compared to Monday’s levels (12/08/2013) and a decrease of 39 points compared to previous Tuesday’s levels (06/08/2013). Despite much of the East being closed towards the end of last week and the Eid holidays going on in the Middle East, the crude oil market was still able to note some significant improvement over one week ago thanks to firming conditions in the North Sea/Baltic for Afras and WAF for Suezmaxes. The BDTI Monday (12/08/2013), was at 631 points, an increase of 13 points and the BCTI at 570, a decrease of 42 points compared to the previous Monday’s levels (05/08/2013).
With activity dropping this week in the Atlantic basin and the Pacific showing no real sign of hope, Capes were back on the downward trail, cooling off any hope that the market would refrain from a too strong drop this summer. It now looks as though we may well be on a strong downward course which will unlikely reverse till the start of September at which time all going well, demand for restocking should be recovering once again.
The Panamaxes seemed to have caught themselves in a nasty downward spiral, with the drop in rates continuing on this week as further market support was lost. Charterers are seemingly relaxing their interest in both basins, causing a shortage of cargoes and a building up of open tonnages all around. The only notable activity to be seen was that coming out of the USGulf which seemed to be feeding the market with some hope and helping owners fend off any rapid drop in freight rates.
Another overall slow week in both basins for Supras with only the Cont/ Med keeping things moving and allowing for rates to close of the week with a barely positive change compared to a week prior. Grain activity from the Black Sea seem to be still coming in strong and keeping things moving, while the pacific sank into almost complete silence as the holidays in Asia kept activity to a minimum. The Handies were to close off the week with a negative w-o-w change in freight rates as things seemed to not go so well especially as activity from the US Gulf started to drop.
