HEAVY CONGESTION AT AUSTRALIAN PORTS REACHING ALL TIME HIGH TO 120 SHIPS IN EAST COAST AUSTRALIA - VISTAAR SHIPPING
COALspot.com (Singapore): The market this week was a bit soft and the BDI was down by almost 10 pct and closed at 3,703 points.
The drop in BDI is mainly due to Cape which was down by 890 points and closed at 7,106 points. The Panamax index also dropped by 308 points and closed at 2,817 points. The Supramax index was almost at same levels just down by 15 points and closing at 1,734 points, whereas the Handysize index dropped by 245 points closing at 764 points.
The average charters rates at the close of the week was at Cape / US$ 78,945; Panamax / US$ 22,582 ; Supramax / US$ 18,134 and Handysize / US$ 11,004. The BDI as mentioned last week seems will continue to be between 3,500 to 4,500 points for next few weeks.
There is heavy congestion at Australian ports reaching all time high to 120 ships in East Coast Australia.
Also several Chinese and some Indian ports are congested heavily. There could a correction in BDI and pressure could be on the dry bulk market if the congestion reduces at these ports there is a possibility that the market could soften.
The iron ore import by China continued to remain firm and China is expected to import around 517 million tonnes this year 2009 compared to 480 million tonnes last year 2008.
There is a talk of Indian government imposing a export tax/levy on iron ore which could make Indian iron ore less competitive compared to Barzilian and Australian iron ore. This could affect the shipping market especially the Supramax and handysize sector. Since last two/three weeks Supramax ships continued enjoyed good charter rates at usd 20,000-22,000 per day.
The other factor which could have a major impact on shipping is discovery of 3 billion tons of iron ore deposits by China in Liaoning Province (near Beijing) ,however the grade may not match rich ores of Brazil and Australia, the deposit could still impact long-term import demand for the Chinese steel industry, and therefore reduce shipments for major global suppliers like BHP Billiton Rio Tinto , and Vale.
The Supramax from India to China continued to enjoy good charter rates and the iron ore charterers having to pay higher freight. The Far East/South East Asia was slightly soft as compared to last week. Other regions also was slightly soft.
The short period rates with dely Far East was around same almost at levels as last week at Supramax- US$ 15,000 / 16,000 ; Panamax / US$ 21,000 and Cape / US$ 58,000.
There was relatively less period activity compared to last week.
The crude prices was slightly soft with brent crude down to US$ 67 per barrel but however the prices rebound to US$ 70 per barrel levels. The bunker prices for IFO (380 cst) prices ex Singapore was firm at US$ 405-410 pmt.
"Most analysts expect that the crude prices is expected to maintain at the current levels and bunker prices expected to remain firm" - Capt.Reddy, Vistaar Shipping, Singapore
The indicative spot freight rates on Supramax quoted by Vistaar Shipping is as follows:
Coal
-Indonesia / EC India : US$ 13.50 / 14.00 pmt
-Indonesia / WC India : US$ 16.50 / 17.00 pmt
-Richards Bay / WC India : US$ 21.00 / 22.00 pmt
-Richards Bay / EC India : US$ 22.00 / 23.00 pmt
-Queensland / EC India : US$ 20.00 /21.00 pmt
Iron Ore
-WC India / N.China : US$ 18.00 / 19.00 pmt
-EC India / N.China : US$ 17.00 / 18.00 pmt
