INDONESIAN COAL EXPORTS TO CHINA DROPS 39.76 PERCENT IN JANUARY 2012
COALspot.com: Indonesia, the world largest coal exporter, shipped 28.21* mln mt of coal in January 2012, slightly lower than its December 2011 exports.
Indonesia's coal exports to China has also dropped in January 2012, compared to December exports. China has imported 6.89* million tons of coal in January which is around 4.55 million tons lesser than its imports in December 2011.
However, India has imported more coal in January 2012. Indian utilities have imported around 6.10* million MT in January, which is around 4.78 percent higher than December 2011, imports.
46.08* percent of total Indonesian coal exports in January shipped to China and India. Coal demand from India and China drastically increased for Indo coal since 2010 and expected to continue this year. However world’s coal experts expected that, India will import more coal than China in 2012.
Indonesian coal price reference which has declared by government of Indonesia has gained 2.09 percent in February compared to Janaury 2012. Indonesian ministry of energy resources has sets the February 2012 Coal Reference Price at US$ 111.58 per ton for spot shipment.
Indonesian government is also strictly monitoring the contracted price between sellers and buyers of Indonesian coal to avoid price transferring. Indonesian suppliers were required by law to obtain government's approval prior to sign any term contract with their buyers. Suppliers are prohibited to sell coal below HBA index and urged them to re-negotiate the existing contracts with their respective buyer’s to accommodate HBA regulation.
The Indonesian government has already issued a regualtion to ban un-processed mineral and metal export by May 6, 2012.
The low energy coal export ban also expected to be issued any time. However the minimum calorific value of coal that to be banned for export is unknown. According to the latest draft, government is planning to ban coal that contains calorific value lesser than 5700 kcal/kg on air dried basis. The producers of below 5700 kcal/kg gad coal are required to upgrade their coal to 5700 kcal/kg or more if they want to continue export.
“This is one of our strategies to ensure the mandates of the 2009 law on minerals and coal is upheld. Mining companies should have good faith in preparing the way for the raw-materials export ban,” energy and Mineral Resources Minister Jero Wacik said recently.
