ADARO MAY RAISE COAL SALES TO CHINA, INDIA PLANTS - THE JAKARTA GLOBE
PT Adaro Energy, the country’s second-largest coal producer, may increase sales of power-plant coal to China and India on signs of a global economic recovery, a company official said.
Adaro may boost sales of thermal coal to China to 4.5 million metric tons and sales to India to 4 million tons this year, Alastair Grant, Adaro’s marketing director, said on the sidelines of the Coaltrans Asia summit in Bali on Tuesday. “China looks strong in the second half,” Grant said.
India’s electricity shortage and China’s rising power demand led to increased demand for coal by power plants. Adaro’s profit may increase on higher prices for its 2009 contracts, Credit Suisse analyst Haider Ali said in May.
Adaro plans to export 33 million tons this year from its estimated output of about 42 million tons, Grant said. It sent 3.5 million tons to China and 3 million tons to India in 2008. The company produced about 38.5 million tons of the fuel last year in Indonesia, Grant said.
Credit Suisse set Adaro’s 12-month share target price at Rp 1,500. Adaro shares rose 5.1 percent to Rp 1,450 on Tuesday, as local mining stocks soared on hopes of a global recovery.
Adaro’s announcement comes just after the government said it would soon complete a draft to fix a reference price for coal and set domestic allocations to boost government revenue from the $15-billion-a-year industry.
The reference price, which will be used to calculate revenue for the state, should be ready for the 2010 government budget, Energy Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro said on Monday. Producers may have to set aside up to 40 percent of their output for domestic use, he said, adding that an agency would be appointed to manage quotas for local miners.
“The coal price will be used to determine and optimize government revenue from coal production,” Purnomo said.
Swings in coal prices in the past have led to fluctuating government income from coal royalties. The government gets 35 percent of its revenue from the oil, gas and minerals industry — of that, 4 to 5 percentage points are from minerals, Purnomo said.
The formula for the reference price will be based on coal price indexes and will take into account the calorific value and moisture content of the coal. Higher calorific values and lower moisture content could lead to better prices.
Indonesia may raise coal output by 4.4 percent to 250 million metric tons this year, said Gerard Strahan, managing director for Coaltrans Conferences. Coal prices have fallen to $60 a ton from $125 a year earlier, he said.
Mines will need to set aside up to 70 million tons for local use, Purnomo said. The government plans to raise coal use to 33 percent of energy consumption by 2025, from 19 percent last year, he said.
The government may set two sets of reference prices, one each for the domestic and export market, said Bambang Setiawan, director general for mineral resources, coal and geothermal affairs. The domestic price will take into account production costs and margins, he said. Indonesia’s total coal output may exceed 300 million tons by 2025, he said.
