A STRONG REBOUND FOR THE CAPE MARKET - BRS
A strong rebound for the Cape market, as cargoes continued to flow into the market and tonnage remained tight in the Atlantic, according to Barry Rogliano Salles, an independent broker in the international market.
Barry Rogliano Salles said in its weekly news letter, overall, a near 11% increase took the BCI to 3,335 points. The Panamax market went in the other direction, reversing the previous week’s gains and posting a 6% decline to 1,641 points. The smaller sizes showed minor gains, with the BSI at 1,479 points (+2.3%) and the BHI at 687 points (+1.5%). There was growing uncertainty in the coal markets, with US producer Alpha Natural Resources reporting it had revised down its planned 2011 coking coal shipments by 12%, citing in part reduced Asian demand. US exports have grown over the past two years on the back of Asian buying, but may now be seeing a contraction.
Capesize
It was a slow start to the week for the Capes, and initially it appeared the previous week’s declines would be repeated. But from Tuesday, the steady flow of cargos from the mining companies saw rates turn a corner, and with plenty of fixtures the market saw gains for the rest of the week, including a sharp rise at the end. Overall the BCI rose 11% to 3,335 points, while the 4TC leapt 17% to $28,888. Meanwhile a short period deal was rumoured done at $20,500 per day. The change in sentiment also affected the paper market, with Q4 rising 7.5% to $19,338. Monday saw another small gain in the index and 4TC, although the week ahead was expected to flatten out somewhat.
Panamax
It was a downward trend for the Panamax market as a whole as the 4TC came off $872 w-o-w with the main impetus coming from the over-tonnaged Pacific which fell away by $2,630 as 3A ended the week at $11,333 per day.
The backhaul also experienced a negative movement dropping $911 w-o-w whereas the TA and FH remained relatively unchanged. However we were yet to see the effects of ships ballasting from the Pacific and how this balances against increased USG cargoes. TA ended the week fixing around $14,000 levels and FH $24,500 levels. There has been little movement on the short period front with numbers still around $14,500 per day, similar to the previous week.
Supramax/Handy
The market was pretty active in the Continent, Black Sea, Indo and China. The US Gulf saw better rates on the Supras going to the Far East than to the Med and Continent.
Supras saw healthy numbers from the US Gulf at around $31,000 per day for trips to the Far East and about $26,000 for trips to the Eastern Med. We also saw very healthy rates in the Far East with Indo/China trips going for about $16,500 per day pro and about $15,500 for Indo/India voyages. China/India rates were also striking with Supras going at about $17,000 for such trips. The ECSA and Continent market was not that active on the Supras. The Handies also saw a flourishing marketing in the Black Sea where Handymax vessels went at about $21,000 for trips to SE Asia, while US Gulf/Med trips went at about $25,000 pd pro.
Smaller Handies saw rates such as $23,000 for trips out of Continent to India and about $14,000 for Continent /West Africa voyages. The quantity of grain cargoes in the Continent and Black Sea played a major part to increase the rates we noticed in the market. China/India voyages went for about $12,500 pd pro. We saw lower numbers such as $6,000 pd pro for Handymax for backhaul trips. We saw a few fixtures in the market with Supras going at about $15,000 for 3-5 months period and about $14,500 for 4-6 months period. For longer periods we saw about $13,000 for 1 year period and $14,000 for 2 year period, still on Supras.
