INDIAN GOVT PLANS TO DEVELOP 9 NEW MAJOR PORTS BY 2016 - INVEST MONEY / HELLENIC SHIPPING
The government has announced to make a investment of more than Rs 22,000 crore (approximately US$ 4,623,791,331) to develop nine new major ports in the country over a period of five years. Nine coastal states of the country – West Bengal, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat, have been asked by the government to select sites for the development of a major port in each state.
These 9 new ports are likely to be built on the pattern of the Port of Singapore.
As per the data of Shipping Ministry, the construction of each port would cost approximately Rs 2,500 crore (approximately US$ 525,430,833). The construction of the new ports which are expected to be designed on the blueprint of the Port of Singapore, is aimed to boost the maritime trade of the country.
Currently, there are 12 major and 176 minor ports across the country. The 12 existing major ports are Mumbai, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, Kolkata (with Haldia), Chennai, Visakhapatanam, Kochi, Paradip, New Mangalore, Marmagao, Ennore, Tuticorin and Kandla.
The Shipping Ministry is planning to create around 3,200 million tonne port capacity so that it can handle the expected traffic of about 2,500 million tonne by 2020. A port is categorised as a major port which have two or more berths with facilities handling 100,000 tonne per month of cargo from ocean-going ships.
