NEWCASTLE PORT'S WEEKLY COAL EXPORTS INCREASE 3.6% - BLOOMBERG
Coal shipments from Australia’s Newcastle port, the world’s biggest export harbor for the fuel, rose 3.6 percent last week while the number of vessels queuing to load increased after storms restricted ship movements.
The volume exported in the week ended 7 a.m. local time yesterday increased to 1.5854 million metric tons from 1.5303 million tons a week earlier, Newcastle Port Corp. said on its Web site. Thirty-five ships, waiting to load 2.8 million tons of coal, were outside the harbor, up from 28 seven days earlier.
Coal ships queued for an average 9.8 days to load, down from 12.8 days a week earlier, Newcastle Port said. The waiting time compared with 0.4 days for general cargo vessels, it said.
Nineteen vessels carrying coal sailed in the week end May 23, Newcastle Port said today in an e-mailed report. Ten ships were bound for Japan, three for China, two for Taiwan and one each for South Korea, Mexico, Thailand and Hong Kong.
Newcastle Port yesterday resumed normal ship movements after disruptions caused by storms that killed two people and forced the evacuation of 16,000 residents along Australia’s east coast.
The weekly price index for power-station coal shipped from Newcastle gained 2.4 percent to $64.82 a ton, according to the globalCOAL NEWC index.
Rio Tinto Group, Xstrata Plc and BHP Billiton Ltd. are among mining companies that ship coal through Newcastle.
