DEPARTMENT RECEIVES REPORT FROM GEOLOGICAL BODY AND NEDO - ESDM
The Geological Body of the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources have presented their Joint Study on Evaluation of Coal Resources and Reserves in Indonesia report, at the Auditorium of the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources. This 5 year study, carried out in collaboration with The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), have devised a system to accurately evaluate coal locations in Indonesia, both for deep mining or coal bed methane (CBM) purposes.
“This system has been able to improve the estimation of Indonesia’s coal potential, so that we will able to know the amount of potential and quality of coals that is available” explains the Secretary General, Waryono Karno representing the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources during his opening speech. This event is attended by the Director General of NEDO, Mr Tomoda, the NEDO joint study team, high ranking officials of the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Head of the Geological Body and his deputies.
By identifying the significant increase of coal sources, the Secretary General expects that the national planning, management, and usage of coal may be integrated in a supply and demand side management model, for both present and future needs.
The policy on coal management and usage needs to be supported by an accurate data of coal resource and reserve which will give a clear illustration on Indonesia’s coal potential, including low to high calorie coal, and other quality parameters. The Secretary General further explained that the development and usage may be accurately planned for several needs, including power, export, development of coal liquefaction and gasification.
The Secretary General expects that cooperation in other energy and mineral resource fields may be further continued in order to increase our ability in developing the energy and mineral resources in Indonesia. “I ask the Geological Body to maintain and develop the coal resource and reserve evaluation system to be used around Indonesia”.
