KADIN CALLS FOR BIGGER RECOGNITION OF MINING SECTOR - MAJALAHTAMBANG
The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN Indonesia) had called other sectors, particularly the forestry and the land administration sectors, to provide a bigger recognition to the mining sector, as the latter has so far provided a bigger contribution to the state's revenue compared to the previous two sectors.
Until now, the existence of the mining sector has always been pegged back by other sectors, as in the case of the prohibition of mining activities at forest areas. This is mainly due to the fact that mining zones have always been left out from the national spatial planning arrangements.
The above is a highlight of KADIN's input for the preparation of a draft governmental regulation (RPP in its Indonesian abbreviation). According to Prof. Dr. Abrar Saleng, an adviser on legal matters to the working group, the inclusion of mining zones into the national spatial planning should not be kept any longer.
He also said that KADIN had proposed a procedure where local governors, regents and mayors submit their recommendations on mining zones' verification prior to a ministerial approval. The Professor then stressed out that once an area is confirmed as a mining zone, other sectors should immediately recognize and respect it to ultimately avoid the chronic overlapping of mining areas.
The Indonesian government is currently preparing four draft regulations (RPPs) in support of the mining law No. 4/2009, namely on mining zones, on mining business activities, on control and supervision of mining activities and on reclamation and post-mining practices. In its capacity as a bridge between the government and the business sector, KADIN would concentrate on contributing to the first two RPPs as they have the most immediate impact towards business in the mining sector.
