NUCLEAR SUPERTANKERS TO SHAKE UP SHIPPING - THIS IS MONEY
This is money reported that, plans are under way that could see nuclear-powered supertankers sailing the world’s shipping lanes, refuelling only once every seven years.
Lloyd’s Register, one of the societies that set safety standards for shipbuilding, has started to rewrite its rules for nuclear-powered ships.
And it has joined a research consortium to explore the potential for nuclear propulsion of future generations of supertankers up to 150,000 tonnes.
It is confident that within a decade nuclear reactors the size of a garden shed will be propelling huge tankers at up to 35 knots, double the present average cruising speeds.
‘This is a very exciting project,’ said Lloyd’s Register chief executive Richard Sadler. ‘We believe that as society recognises the limited choices available in the low carbon, oil-scarce economy – and as land based nuclear plants become commonplace – we will see nuclear ships sooner than many people expect.’
The first step is to fit reactors made by US company Hyperion Power Generation, based near the nuclear research facility in Los Alamos, New Mexico, in conventional supertankers.
Greek shipping company, Enterprises Shipping and Trading of Athens is part of the consortium and with the help of renowned ship designer BMT Nigel Gee of Southampton, the plan is to design and build modular ships that would enable the cargo section to be detached and towed into harbour while the nuclear ‘mothership’ anchored offshore.
The impetus for this push into carbon-free propulsion comes from the recognition that shipping is environmentally dirty – marine engines use ‘bunker’ fuel, the low grade oil other industries do not want.
Fear is also growing that new rules will effectively fine shipowners for pollution from tankers. A study by the UN calculated that by 2008 annual emissions from the world’s merchant fleet had already reached 1.12 billion tonnes of CO2 – nearly 4.5 per cent of global emissions.
Shipowners are increasingly aware of the problem. Captain Wei Jiafu, chief executive of Chinese -owned shipping group Cosco, suggested at a recent conference that he was in favour of nuclear power on merchant ships.
‘As they are already on board submarines, why not cargo ships?’ he said before revealing that Cosco was in talks with national nuclear authorities to develop nuclear powered ships.
