VESSEL OWNERS ARE RELUCTANT FOR INDONESIA TO INDIA COAL TRIPS - FEARNBULK
Handy
Last week ended with a flourish of activity as the Chinese tried to fix any prompt vessels before the Golden week festivities, and since they commenced on Friday the East has been reasonably quiet. We have seen Richards Bay rounds fixing from as low as the 13k level, incidentally failed, but the level seems to be closer to mid teens with owners aiming around the 17k level but still seeing a gap with charters rates. Iron ore activity is still slow. NOPAC has been active with owners aiming close to the 20k level. Owners are reluctant for Indonesian to India coal trips due to lack of cargo when re-opening in India. Short period levels are in the early 20k´s.
Panamax
Despite the substantial recover in the Cape market, Panamax rates were under pressure and continued to slide on low volumes as the Chinese holiday move on. Transatlantic business was slow and partly driven by grain ex US Gulf which seems well supplied by tonnage. Levels in the Atlantic are down towards 18k/day but fronthaul still above the healthy 30k mark. The Pacific was overwhelmed by more spot tonnage but some fresh requirements appeared during the week to balance out levels at 17-18k/day. Period fixtures were few but as FFA moved up short period fixtures were done at 24k for 4-6 months. Expectations for a strong Q4 are still there and sentiment is slowly turning positive among Owners in particular for a possible increase in demand next week onwards.
Capesize
As opposed to expectations of a more inactive week due to Chinese golden week, rates have been up up up Australia-PRC reached USD 12.50 pmt before it went just below 12 again (last week this route was being traded in the 10s). The Tubarao/ Qingdao reached USD 29.20 pmt, however at the time of writing it seems uncertain whether rates will remain at these levels or if there will be a correction. Obviously this depends very much on Vales overall demand. It has been a busy short period market, with rates around USD 35k-36k and a year presently very low USD 30k daily.
