INDONESIA WILL BECOME A NET IMPORTER OF ENERGY IN 2030 - BPPT
Jakarta Updates reported that,Indonesian Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT) predicted that the energy situation in Indonesia after 2030 will be very difficult.
“In 2030 Indonesia will become a net importer of energy because energy production from Indonesia can no longer meet domestic consumption, “said the BPPT Head Dr. Marzan A Iskandar at the “Indonesia Energy Outlook 2010” book launching. The book is published by the Center of Technology Development for Energy Resource BPPT in Jakarta, Friday. In Indonesia after 2030 as described in the 229 pages thick book, he continued, coal will be the main energy source for Indonesia with coal production levels reached at least 517 million tons per year.
Indonesia’s coal reserves will only suffice until 20 years later (2050). Meanwhile, post-2030 petroleum deficit will reach 650 million barrels of oil equivalent which can only be covered by imports. For LPG, Indonesia is also expected to import up to 70 percent of its 10 million tons needs.
Predictions in this book are based on the facts that are recorded today. If there are significant changes like finding new fossil fuels reserves or construction of nuclear power plants, then these predictions will likely to improve, he said.
Meanwhile, BPPT Deputy Information Technology, Energy, and Materials, Dr. Unggul Priyanto, says that the book also describes in detail about the electricity problems in Indonesia, ranging from electricity production to the power plant infrastructure.
“In 2030 Indonesia will generate up to 687 TWh of electricity or a production increase of about 4.3 times from 157 TWh in 2009. BPPT also predicted that coal will be the main fuel source for the power plants with a share of 45 %”, he said.
He admitted, with the dominant use of coal, the total CO2 emissions by 2030 will be quite high, estimated at 1.2 billion tons, in which coal accounted for CO2 emissions of 844 million tons or 67 % of the total energy in 2030.
Alternative energy that has a great potential to be used as electricity according to him is geothermal which will increase significantly with a share of around 13 % (16 GW), 85 % of those are located in the Java and Bali.
Waste based power generation (biomass) will account for 0.2 % of Indonesian total electricity generation in 2030.
