THE PANAMAX CONTINUED ITS DOWNWARD TREND FROM LAST WEEK - FEARNBULK
HANDY
Activity remains slow this week combined with a lack of fresh enquiry and tonnage over-supply in the Atlantic. Indexes are all negative except Cape. ´Vega Lea´, built 2010, 53716 dwt, was recently fixed by Cargill basis dely dop Spanish Med end September trip via Tampa redel India usd 25250 daily, which is low. There is some hope that grains will pick up but no sign of this as yet. Outlook: softening of rates on prompt positions. With holidays throughout the East it has, as expected, been quiet with an air of negative sentiment. Indian Ocean rates have struggled and it seems that owners are aiming back to the Pacific Basin or Atlantic instead of waiting for iron ore to firm up the rates. However, Indonesia into India remains active. Nopac rounds and Pacific rounds are somewhere around the 18,000 level. Some still prefer short period but owners are struggling to match up to charterers rates.
PANAMAX
The Panamax continued its downward trend from last week, however the Chinese re-entered the market on Monday. We see more cargoes in the market, but several of these cargos are tender biz. The steel production in China has picked up a bit again, and this should be positive for the iron ore prices and the shipping market. The longer period market is absent with what´s done-done private. Tarvs fetching around very low usd 20´s, fronthauls around 30k and Pac rounds fixing in the high teens. For the rest of the week we expect some more activity as the Chinese have holidays coming up (1/7 Oct) and the "Golden Week" coming up the week after. They will most likely need to clear out business matters before this holiday.
CAPESIZE
The back end of last week began to show some signs of improvement in the market. The expectation was that this week would be active as the Far Eastern markets were back at work and would be busy clearing their desks, pending next week’s holidays. This has cautiously proven to be true. First led by the paper market and then followed by physical fixtures. The fronthaul market has moved from mid usd 20´s level to usd 28.00 pmt for Brazil/China, and vessels in the Pacific are securing round voyages in the mid usd 30000 range. The Atlantic is still a bit sluggish and the bids are actually below the rates achieved in the Pacific. There has been little activity on the period front, except a rumor that one of the ore majors has taken a vessel for short period in the mid usd 30´s.
