MOZAMBIQUE: COAL IN THREE MORE TETE DISTRICTS
 All africa reported that, Coal deposits have been confirmed in the districts of Changara, Cahora Bassa and Magoe, in the western Mozambican province of Tete, as a result of exploration undertaken since 2008 by the companies JSPL, Essar and Eta Star, according to the provincial director of mineral resources and energy, Adelaide Pedro de Jesus, cited in Tuesday's issue of the Maputo daily "Noticias".
JSPL (Jindal Steel and Power Limited) and the Essar group are Indian companies, while ETA Star is based in Dubai.
JSPL in August announced the discovery of coal reserves of 1.65 billion tonnes in Cahora Bassa district. It hopes to produce 2.5 million tonnes of coal a year as from 2011, rising to 7.4 million tonnes as from 2013.
These companies, plus a Mozambican company, Carvoeira de Samoa, are also exploring in Mutarara, Maravia and Zumbo districts
"The results obtained indicate the existence of coal in the entirety of Tete province", said Pedro de Jesus. "Apart from the Moatize coal basin, located on the right bank of the Zambezi River, there are also deposits of coal in almost all districts located on the left bank of the river, namely Changara, Cahora Bassa and Magoe".
Two companies already have mining concessions, both in Moatize district, and plan to start production next year - they are Vale of Brazil, and Riversdale of Australia. "These large companies are receiving the latest equipment with state-of-the-art technology for the extraction of coal in open cast mines. It is forecast that by the first half of 2011 there will be large-scale production and marketing of coal mined in Moatize," stressed Pedro de Jesus.
The director added that 16 other companies are licensed to search for other minerals, especially alluvial gold, platinum, iron, precious stones, base metals and mineral water.
