INDONESIA HAS EXPORTED 187.656 MILLION TONNES OF COAL IN EIGHT MONTHS

COALspot.com:
Indonesia, the world largest coal exporter has exported 187.656  million tons of coal for the period January – August this year, according to our sources in Indonesian coal industry. Indonesia’s August  exports reached 22.89 million tons, down 2.61 percent M-O-M. Indonesia’s coal exports in July 2010 were 23.51 mln tons.

China & India Imports
China was the largest importer of Indonesian coal  in August  2010. China has imported 5.78 million tons of Indonesian coal in August and 1.82 million ton higher than India’s imports. India has imported only 3.95 million tons of Indonesian coal in the month of August 2010, followed by South Korea, Japan and Malaysia have imported 3.26, 2.97 and 1.91 mln tons respectively.

“ Indonesia may produce about 305 million tons of coal this year of which 240 million will be exported, Kamandanu, Chairman of Indonesian coal mining Association said recently . He further said while attending a coal conference in Jakarta, “ Indonesian Coal prices may rise to USD 100 per ton by the end of this year because of bad weather, which has affected production”. Indonesian coal producing areas were affected by unseasonal rains for last two to three month, and seasonal rain is expecting to start next month.

China’s Indonesian coal imports in August dropped  2.64 percent compared to July imports.  However India’s Indonesian coal imports in August increased 12.43 percent compared to July 2010 imports. China has imported 5.93 mln tons of coal in July and India has imported 3.52 mln tons. Indian companies are also investing in coal mines as well as in infrastructure in Indonesia to secure fuel for their upcoming new power plants in India. As stated in media, according minister of coal of India, "Indian may consume 2 billion tons of coal by 2030".

Many Indian government utilities were also awarding coal purchase orders for Indonesian origin due to freight advantage and price competitiveness. Indian government and private utilities are also looking for mine investment opportunities in Indonesia, Mozambique, South Africa as well as Australia.

Indonesia's coal exports to India  raised by 12.43 percent M-o-M.

Low GCV and High moisture coal
Coal hungry India and China together imported around 9.74 million tons or  42.54 percent of total coal exports of Indonesia in August 2010. Indonesia’s high total moisture coal also hit export market recently with a significant  tonnage for export market. Indonesian higher TM coal generally containing very low sulphur and low ash which are environmentally attractive for buyers.  “Indian companies are now showing interest on high moisture and low GCV coal”, according to Chairman of ICMA.

Indonesian coal price referance
According to big scale coal mining companies, the prices of Indonesian coal are slowly heading to north and it is not following International coal indices. However coal price reference which is declared by Indonesian government dropped third straight month in September 2010. Indonesian
thermal coal price reference, a monthly benchmark price declared by Ministry of Energy and mineral resources of Republic of Indonesia for Indonesian coals, fell 5.07 percent to US$ 90.05 per ton in September. Producers are required to refer ICPR ( HBA) when negotiating with buyers of Indonesian coal for spot as well as long term contracts deals.

Top coal exporter
Bumi Resources as a parent company of KPC and Arutmin was a largest exporter of Indoensian coal in August 2010 followed by Adaro Energy.
