MID HIGH TEENS FROM WCI, AND HIGH TEENS FROM ECI TO CHINA - BRS
A fairly flat market for the dry bulk segments this week, although the Panamaxes jumped on the back of strong grain exports in the Atlantic. It was an unremarkable week for the Capes and although period rates remain strong, there remains some concern for the fourth quarter. China’s decision to close steel production capacity in order to meet energy-saving targets has created uncertainty, with one local analyst estimating it would cut the country’s total steel output for the year by 8%. So far, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Guangxi, Hebei, Shanxi, Gansu and the inner Mongolia provinces have all been affected. China’s iron ore imports already fell 13% in August, the largest drop in seven months, as steel production slowed and India reduced its exports.
Capesize
A small increase in the BCI this week, with the four time charter average rising to US$41,000 by week-end. Rates improved most in the Atlantic where tonnage availability was fairly tight compared to demand. In the FFA market, rates were little changed for 2011 but took a lurch downwards for the remainder of this year. Q4 finished the week at US$34,100 compared to US$35,100 the previous Friday. Period rates remained stable however, and a 180,000 tonner delivery ex yard in November was reportedly fixed for 11-13 months at US$32,750. The BCI came off slightly on Monday, but only by 28 points.
Panamax
This week the Panamax market took advantage of bullish sentiment thanks to a still active USG and NOPAC area with grains and a relatively busy coal market out of Indo/ Aussie. The big players were, therefore, not hesitating in taking in more ships for period paying up to US$28,500/day for tes 74 dely Nchina redel WW. The Nopac round was paying US$29,000/day, up from US$26,500/ day last week. In the Atlantic the market was less active, but still, the TA round improved by more than US$1,000/day ending the week at over US$28,000/day. Thursday and Friday, the activity failed off and some uncertainty on the amount of steel that will be produced in China in Q4 and the amount of Indian’s iron ore available for exportation turned the market in the southward direction.
Supramax/Handy
The Baltic Supramax Index was quite steady with a very slight upward trend as it increased by 47 points to finish at 2,046 points last week, while the average of the time charter routes gained about US$ 497 to finish close to US$ 21,395. Activity picked up in the Atlantic with a considerable amount of new grain orders originating from the USG mainly to the Med and Continent. Modern Supramaxes were paid in the low/mid US$ 30,000s per day for delivery USG to Med/Cont. For the smaller sizes, the Handysizes were pretty much in line with the Supramaxes, with a slight increase of 12 points to finish the week at 1078, while the time charter average went up by US$ 168 to finish the week at US$ 15,876 per day. ECSA or USG to Skaw/Passero are also at similar levels in the very low US$ 20,000s and very high US$ 19,000s respectively. On the period front, which has also been quite active, it is worth noticing a modern (expected delivery December 2010) 57,000 DWT was fixed for a 5 year period at around US$16,000. Supramax vessels are getting fixed ex Far East for a 12 month period at around US$ 21,500. For shorter period, similar size vessels are being fixed at around US$ 23,000/24,000 while the Handies are being fixed at the US$ 17,000s level.
In the Pacific, the week started out strong, with the view that a lot of the fixing would be done on the Pacific rounds before the start of the Aid Al Fitr / Idul Fitri / Puasa holidays at the end of the week. Index type Supramaxes in North Asia were fixing in the mid-high teens and high teens to low US$20,000s with South China delivery for Pacific rounds. This remained steady through the week. The same could be said for vessels in India, where quite a bit of tonnage was cleared out for Richards Bay rounds back into India (high teens off both coasts), and trips to China (midhigh teens from WCI, and high teens from ECI).
