FREIGHT MARKETS MAY BE A BIT SOFT THIS WEEK - VISTAAR SINGAPORE
COALspot.com: The freight market continued its upward trend with the BDI almost touching 3000 points. However the uncertainty seems to continue with regard to iron movement and whether the freight markets will continue to the trend upwards. Last week the BDI was up only by 4.14 pct where as the Cape index was up only by 2.08 pct. The panamax index saw the biggest last week increase which was up by 8.75 pct.
The Supramax index and the handy size index was marginally up by 2.71 pct and 1.13 pct respectively. The effects of ban on grain exports by Russia and lower iron ore contract prices will have to be seen in the next couple of weeks. Close of the last week the futures on all segments were down and softer, which could indicate that the markets may be a bit soft this week.
The average charter hire was at Cape/US$ 41006 per day, Panamax/US$ 27312 per day, Supramax/US$ 21935 per day and Handy size/US$ 15876 per day.
The Supramax index in the Fareast (S6 route) was marginally up by US$ 135 per day ( up by 0.7 pct ) and closed at US$ 19675 per day. The ECI/China (S7) route was down by US$ 511 per day (down by 2.70 pct) and closed at US$ 18348 per day . The S6 and S7 routes seems will maintain these levels for next week and could be a bit softer.
The futures for three years (2010-2012) was almost at same levels and was around Cape/US$ 28000 per day, Panamax/US$ 22000 per day, Supramax/US$ 18500 per day and Handy size/US$ 14000 per day.
The congestion in EC Australian ports was at the lowest at 93 vessels this week (last week 100 vessels ). The vessels waiting at main coal loading ports were at Hay point/1, DBCT/42, Gladstone/4, Abbot Point/Nil, New Castle/44, Port Kembla/2 vessels. On the WC Australia iron ore vessels waiting increased to 33 vessels (last week 20 vessels).
The waiting at Indian ports for coal vessels was quite normal around 3/4 days, except that the congestion Haldia was quite quieting with huge berthing delays.
The Brent crude prices was up and was at US$ 78.22 per barrel (last week US$ 76.55 per barrel ). The bunkers prices was almost also firmer and the prices ex Singapore and was at US$ 442 pmt (IFO 380 CST ex Singapore) on 10th Sept 2010.
