THE FREIGHT MARKET IS EXPECTED TO BE FIRM FOR NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS - VISTAAR SINGAPORE
 COALspot.com: The BDI continued to rise this week by 11.67 pct with the other sectors also keeping the moment. The cape size index also was up by 11.46 pct with the average charter hire at $ 34,913 per day. The Panamax was up by 7.86 pct where as the Supramax was up sharply by 13.38 pct. The handy size index was up by about 5.33 pct. The Supramax short period rates was quite strong with charter rates at $ 24/25,000 per day.
The market is expected to be firm for next couple of weeks with the holiday season almost coming to end. The main driver for the strong market seems to be coal and iron ore supported by grain movement .
The average charter hire was at Cape/$ 34,913 per day, Panamax/$ 24,830 per day, Supramax/$ 21,710 per day and Handy size/$ 15,682 per day.
The Supramax index in the Fareast (S6 route) was up sharply by $ 2,618 per day ( up by 14.30 pct) per day and closed at $ 20,918 per day. The ECI/China (S7) route also up by $ 1,242 per day and closed at $ 19,904 per day . The S6 and S7 routes likely to be steady/firm.
The futures for three years (2010-2012) was firm for cape and panamax vessels and was at around Cape/$ 28,500 per day, Panamax/$ 22,000 per day, Supramax/$ 19,000 per day, Handy size/$ 14,500 per day.
The congestion in EC Australian ports was at 129 vessels this week (last week 127 vessels ). The vessels waiting at main coal loading ports were at Hay point/8, DBCT/58, Gladstone/11, Abbot Point/1, New Castle/50 vessels, Port Kembla/1 vessels. On the WC Australia iron ore vessels waiting increased to 16 vessels (last week 19 vessels).
The waiting at Indian ports for coal vessels was quite normal around 3/4 days.
The Brent crude prices was bit soft and closed lower than last week at $ 74.45 per barrel (last week $ 75.33 per barrel). The bunkers prices also softened and the prices ex Singapore and was at $ 437 pmt (IFO 380 CST ex Singapore) on 20th August 2010.
