PANAMAX BACKED BY A STRONGER SHORT PERIOD MARKET AND SUPPORTED BY SOME FRESH REQUIREMENTS - FEARNBULK
Handy
The events of this week have confirmed our assessment of last week i.e. activity gradually picked up in the Atlantic with more enquiry seen for short period tonnage for mid/end of August - it is rumoured tonnage achieved high 20´s! Continent, Black Sea and USG have been much more active and with the grain season coming up, expecting the Atlantic to firm up even further. Rates are at mid/high 30´s for t/a rounds on Supras and low 40´s for trips FEast. Outlook: firm. The FEast market was firming during the last week. For NOPAC rounds Supras were fixed in the high teens. For Indo/India rates improved quite a lot, large Supras were fixed at mid 20´s. For short period Supras trading at low/mid 20´s. India; from WCI Supras could achieve high teens for trips to China but it´s still quiet out there and everyone is looking forward to the end of the monsoon season. For R´Bay rounds Supras trading in the high teens.
Panamax
Backed by a stronger short period market and supported by some fresh requirements the sentiment has been more positive this week with the spot market firming slowly in both hemispheres. Expectations for a stronger Q4 and 6.5% increased congestion last week does to some extent assist the optimism. On the other hand new buildings are still pouring out at a rate of 2 bulk carriers/day, spot activity relatively slow leaving mixed feelings to the recent upturn and market sustainability. The Atlantic basin seems fine balanced in the upward trend, with Continent in particular being tight for tonnage. TA rounds are typically in the mid/high 20´s and fronthaul mid 30 ´s + bonus for Aden transit. The Pacific now up to 23-24k for NOPAC rounds, and above mid 20´s for Indonesia rounds or trips via ECSA. Short periods are now at 27k whereas one year has been fixed at 26k. Owners are actively promoting short period, 1 and 2 years, and although takers are there the market shows ambiguity.
the market shows ambiguity.
Capesize
Last week´s upward movement in the freight market was operator driven. The previous week´s standoff between charterers and operators resulted in a flurry of fixtures which, all but, cleaned out the vessels in ballast to Brazil. The combination of this and Vales terminals returning to normal operations, granted owners with for higher rates. The paper market followed suite and this resulted in a few period fixtures being concluded in the low usd 30k´s level. This week started again with a standoff, but so far the rates have edged downwards slightly, while Baltic Index has been catching up with last week’s levels. Ultimately the market remains relatively flat with, but could drive upwards again if the operators return to the market, but unlikely to be dramatic as the influx of new tonnage has a dampening effect.
