NAPOCOR BUYS 122,000 TONS COAL - ABC CBN NEWS
 ABC - CBN News reported that, State-run National Power Corp. (Napocor) said on Thursday it awarded 2 contracts for the supply of a total 122,000 tons of steam coal for its lone coal-fired plant.
The first contract involved the supply of 50,000 tons of coal awarded to Indonesian firm PT Berau Coal, with delivery in six shipments from August to December, Napocor said on its website (www.napocor.gov.ph).
Berau made a single offer of $96 per ton, including cost and freight, at a tender for 50,000 tons coal on April 7. The offer was below Napocor's budget of $101.85 per ton of coal with gross calorific value of 5,120-6,640 kcal/kg.
Napocor said in a separate statement on its website that it also awarded a contract to local oil and gas explorer PNOC-Exploration Corp. for the supply of 72,000 tons of coal at P5,597 ($123) a ton in line with the approved budget. The coal will have a gross calorific value of 3,889-6,000 kcal/kg.
Australia's thermal coal, a benchmark for Asia, rose to an 18-month high of $108 a ton last week, supported by threats of a supply disruption in South Africa.
The coal will be used for Napocor's 100-megawatt Naga-Cebu plant in central Philippines. The power firm's coal needs have dropped significantly this year after selling off most of its coal-fueled power plants, part of a wider power reform program.
