CAPESIZES UP, PANAMAXES DOWN - BRS
It was Capesizes up, Panamaxes down this week as the latter experienced a correction after its recent gains. Period rates for Panamaxes remain firm however, so a big slide was not expected in the short term. In the coal market, South Africa’s Richards Bay terminal confirmed a sharp rise in Asian exports, which rose to 42% of total shipments in the first quarter of this year, up from 25% a year earlier – due mainly to Chinese and Indian demand. In Europe, Thyssenkrupp became the first European buyer to confirm it had agreed an iron ore price on a quarterly basis. In line with the Japanese contracts, it also reported a 100% price increase, back-dated to April 1. Meanwhile China confirmed steelmaker Pangang Group would be combined with Angang Steel and Benxi Iron and Steel. The merger will create the country’s largest steel group.
Supra/Handy
The Handy/Supramax markets stayed firm and stable in the Atlantic throughout the week, while in the Pacific basin the market was also healthy but with less activity and a softening tendency. Supramaxes from West Africa were fetching close to US$ 30,000 per day for trips via ECSA to Continent and closer to low US$ 40,000s for trips out to the East. The USG and ECUS also remained very firm with trips USG to the Med paying in the high US$ 40,000s, and above US$50,000 for trips out. Scrap cargoes from the Continent to the Med are paying Supramax units in the low US$ 30,000s TC equivalent.
The transatlantic round on Supramax was negociated in the low US$ 30,000s level towards the end of the week. Looking at the Pacific market now, India softened during the week with WC stems to China paying in the very low US$ 30,000s TC equivalent on large units and about the same levels from EC India. Supras for Richards Bay rounds back to India were paying in the mid/high US$ 20,000s and it is becoming difficult to persuade owners to finish trips in WC India with Monsoon kicking in.
Nopac and Aussie rounds saw larger units fixed in the low-mid US$ 20,000s, while Indonesia/India and Indo/China rounds were fixed closer to mid US$ 20,000s level depending on delivery point. There were few short period candidates in the Far East but large Supras are seeing close to mid US$ 20,000s levels.
Panamax
A continued slump in the market saw rates slip further on the week. The BPI fell 7% to finish the week at 3,757 points, while the four time charter average closed at US$ 30,239. The Atlantic lacked any fresh enquiry and although there was a clear-out of early tonnage, rates remain under pressure for now, although charterers with stems ex north Continent found tonnage a lot more positional. In the Pacific, the South American grain market continued to serve tonnage out east but again here rates had slipped to around US$ 28,000. The Australia and north Pacific round voyages too came off with less fresh enquiry and deals were being fixed at close to the US$ 30,000 mark. The longer term period market saw a 12 month deal concluded with delivery in the east for prompt dates at a steady US$ 28,000 level.
Capesize
An 8% leap in the four time charter average this week, with rates finishing the week at US$ 28,441. The rise was mainly achieved on the back of strong Atlantic rates where activity picked up noticeably. There was again little period business although a 177,000 dwt vessel ex yard in May was reported fixed at 2 years for US$ 31,500. The market will continue to watch what impact the new, higher commodity prices will have on demand. The BCI inched up 39 points on Monday, with some expectations of a further increase this week.
