China & India Imports
China was a largest importer of Indonesian coal in March 2010. However Indonesian coal exports to China dropped 18.79 percent in March. Indonesia exported 7 mln ton coal in March compared to 8.62 in February and 8.81 MLN tons in January 2010.

“Chinese's interest is still there, and it will continue,"  a seller, related to Chinese exports said. Chinese buyers are dominating Indoensian coal exports since 2nd half of last year, and it is seemed that, the trend will continue and China will be major importer of Indonesian coal for this year.

India was the second largest importer of Indonesian coal in March 2010. Indonesia exported 4,327,912 MT of coal to India in March 2010, compared to 3.92 mln ton in February and  3.28 mln tons in January or increased by 10.20 percent  MoM. South Korea, Japan and Taiwan  have imported 4,121,274, 3,122,198 and 2,403,039 tons of coal in March 2010 respectively.

Indian buyers are around Indonesia to book 6300 (GAD) Kcal/kg coal for May / June loading. Indian coal mine investors are actively looking for potential coal properties in Sumatra and Kalimantan islands to secure their fuel requirements.

Pakistani buyers were also aggressively sourcing 6500 GAD coal in Indonesia for their client. According to market information, a Pakistani trading and shipping company is planning to open a sourcing office in Indonesia to increase Indonesian coal exports to Pakistan. The requirement of 6500 (GAD) or above coal is in high demand in Pakistan, as importers of Indoensian and south African coal are mostly cement producers. Pakistani cement producers prefer to buy high GCV coal / low Ash coal for their plants as the plants were designed for higher GCV coal.

Top coal exporter
Bumi Resources as a parent company of KPC and Arutmin was again become a largest exporter of Indoensian coal in March by exporting around  4.73 mln ton. However, Adaro Indonesian was the single largest exporter of coal In March 2010.  According to our sources, around 15.59 mln tons out of total exports of 27.61 mln ton of coal exported in March, was exported by 10 top coal producers including Bumi, Adaro, Banpu, Berau, Tanito, Bayan and PTBA.

Kaltim Prima Coal, part of Bumi Resources, has secured a thermal coal contract with a large Japanese customer at the FOB price of $ 104/ton (equivalent to 6322 GAR) for delivery over the next 12 months, according to press release.

PT Adaro Energy's net profit for the year ended December 31st, 2009 increased 392% to Rp 4.4 trillion (US$ 487,264,673)* from Rp 887 billion (US$ 98,228,128)* of the year ended December 31st, 2008, according to news release from Adaro Energy.

Banpu Plc, Asean's largest coal miner, said its earnings surged to a record high of 14.23 billion baht last year, an increase of 54% on the previous year, according to Bangkok Post.

PT Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam, Indonesian government owned largest coal producer, signed a $4.8bn contract  for a rail project to construction of a 307km railway from Bukit Asam’s Central Banko coal mine in South Sumatra to Srengsem in the Pampung. The deal reportedly consisted of a $1.3bn rail construction contract, and a $3.5bn 20-year operation and maintenance contract, both with China Railway Engineering Corp. The China Export-Import Bank has been chosen as the main financier for the deal, according to reports. Once the rail project completed, then PTBA production will be increased significantly.

Indonesian coal miners did well instead of a difficult and volatile year in 2009.

Loading delays
The waiting at Indonesian ports for coal vessels was quite normal in Month of March compare to January / February 2010, according to port agents. (cs)
