CAPESIZE - A SURPRISE JUMP IN RATES - BRS
There was a surge across all sizes last week, resulting in the BDI gaining 101 points to end the week at 2,000 points (+5.3%). The BCI reached 3,218 (+2.6%), the BPI 1,913 (+10.8%), BSI at 1,533 (+2.3%) and the BHI progressed to 774 points (+4.6%).
Capesize
A surprise jump in rates was recorded in the latter part of the week despite the week-long holidays in China. W-o-w the 4TC average rose nearly 5% to $27,876 per day. Rio Tinto was busy in the Pacific and a reported $11.35 was reached for one fixture for October loading, with around $10.70 proving to be the average for the week. South African coal proved another active area, while Atlantic tonnage was yet again tight, and again gains here showed the biggest increase. This activity resulted in a firming in the near-period FFA rates and Q4 finished with a near 13% gain compared to the previous week. The 4TC rose another $600 on Monday, with sentiment fairly positive for the week ahead.
Panamax
The Atlantic basin tightened over the week, with notable support emanating from the USG where enquiry remains healthy. Both TA and front haul rates improved notably (an increase of $1,341 on 1A and $1,683 on 2A indices between 30/09/11 - 07/10/11). The Pacific market also appeared tighter, in large part due to the holidays in Asia but also as a result of significant numbers of ballasters having sailed to the Atlantic in search of fresh business. Pacific rounds exhibited strong underlying support, with the 3A index rising by $2,281 over the week. Looking further forward however, there may be some expectation for additional tonnage from the East to weigh down on TA rates, although the market appears stable for the time being. There has also been a notable increase in the volume of open market tonnage in the Pacific at the beginning of the new week, suggesting that the recent upward trend may begin to stabilize a touch.
Supramax/Handy
The Baltic Supramax Index went up by 32 points to finish at 1,533 points last week, while the average of the time charter routes gained about $400 daily to finish at $16,000 per day.
The market remained steady with many players closed due to holidays and celebrations in the Far East. The market was active in the Atlantic however with scrap out of the Continent and more and more freshly added grain/sugar cargos ex-ECSA. Ballasters coming from the Pacific / Indian Ocean helped to balance the rates for the vessels suffering from fewer cargoes in India / Far East. On the other hand, more and more interest for Supramaxes on short / medium period helped to sustain the market.
On the smaller sizes, the Baltic Handysize index went up by 23 points to finish at 774 points with the time charter routes gaining $300 to reach $11,270 daily. The Atlantic and the Pacific levels are becoming quite balanced, and the TARV is worth $11,500/ day today, whereas the Pacific round voyage is valued $11,000 daily. On the period front, we saw interest on both middle period of 1 year and short period. A 57,000 dwt recently built vessel fixed for 12 months trading delivery Far East at $13,750 daily with worldwide redelivery, while short period reached levels close to $14/14,500 daily.
